Wellbeing Tips

And here is a quick relaxation exercise to help you relax...

It's hard not to feel stressed and overworked by the hectic pace of modern life - or by any life-changing events - but before you go into meltdown mode, hit pause, relax and unwind.

Even if it isn't your thing (and maybe it all seems a bit 'hippyish'), basic meditation, stretching and breathing techniques can work wonders for your stress relief.

If you don't take time to unwind, constant stress can lead to a number of physical and psychological problems such as:

  • Poor concentration
  • Depression
  • Back pain
  • Weight gain
  • Weakening of the immune system
  • Increased risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease

Meditation, though seemingly simple, helps to release tension that is stored in your body, especially from your back and shoulders. Stretching will get your body loose and your circulation flowing again.

How to meditate:

1. Find a relaxing atmosphere - We like to make sure that our surroundings are tidy and organised and the lighting is soft. We might even have the odd candle going too!

2. Find a comfy cushion, and sit on ground level

3. Close your eyes, relax every muscle and breathe deeply with your abdomen

4. Focus on each inhale and exhale to exclude other thoughts and quite your mind.

If you find that you can't stop your thoughts chattering, why not focus on imagining your dream holiday? I'm sure thinking about walking barefoot along white sandy beaches will help you to drift away...not quite meditation but a great way to relax and take your mind off the outside world.
